Levonorgestrel containing emergency contraceptives have been used as well as misused by Indian Females in last few years.Thought of shairing a new entrant to the group of post coital contraceptives:ULIPRISTAL.This is yet to reach the Indian market but when available it will be a better medicine than Levonelle,i pill etc.
This can be effectively used up to 5 days of first act of unprotected sexual intercourse in comparison to 72 hrs for current pills and the failure rate is also less than Levonorgestrel containing pills.It should not be used more than once in a cycle.
Like any other medicine once available it needs to be used with discretion and misuse should be avoided

EllaOne is the morning after pill that works up to five days after the intercourse. Before ellaOne was released in 2009, there were pills which could be taken up to 3 days after the intercourse. EllaOne brought a revolution to the market by extending this period. Even though ellaOne works till 120 hours after the intercourse, it is advised that it be taken as soon as possible, because the sooner it is taken, the better it is. The success rate of the pill has also been found to be better. In different clinical trials it has been found that the chances of success of ellaOne are 98 percent, that is, out of 100 women that take the pill as an emergency contraceptive measure, only 2 get pregnant.
