PCOS being extensively researched at the moment.As of now you should be on metformin,whether life long or not we will have to see as we get more information about PCOS.
It doesn't have any dangerous side effect.In case of overdosage it can cause a condition called 'lactic acidosis'.It is one of the most commonly used anti diabetic medicine as well and is considered quite safe.
